Transforming Two Cottages into One: Creating a Spacious and Accessible Retreat – Rowan Cottage

At Higher Longford Cottages, we are always looking for ways to enhance the experience of our guests. Our latest project involves an exciting transformation: merging two charming cottages into one spacious, accessible retreat.

Rowan Cottage and Ash Cottage will be converted in November 2024 into one larger, more spacious and accessible friendly cottage.

This endeavour aims to provide a larger, more inclusive space that can comfortably accommodate all guests, including those with disabilities. Join us as we share the story of this transformation and our commitment to creating a welcoming haven for everyone.

Existing Rowan Cottage

The Inspiration

The inspiration behind combining two cottages into one stems from our desire to offer a more accessible and spacious accommodation option. We recognized the need for a larger, more adaptable space that caters to the diverse needs of our guests, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a comfortable and memorable stay at Higher Longford Cottages.

The Planning Process

Transforming two cottages into one involves careful planning, thoughtful design, and a focus on accessibility. Here are the key steps we took to bring this vision to life:

Assessing the existing cottages and making plans for the future.

Our first task was to thoroughly assess both cottages. Looking at the strengths and weakneses of both these cottages.  We wanted to design a layout that seamlessly blends the two cottages while enhancing accessibility. This included wide doorways, open-plan living areas, and accessible bathrooms and kitchens. We aimed to create a space where all guests, including those with mobility challenges, can move around freely and comfortably.

Preserving Character

While making the cottages more accessible, we also wanted to preserve their unique charm and character. Traditional features such as exposed stonework were retained to maintain the cozy, inviting atmosphere our guests love.

Incorporating Modern Comforts

The new Rowan cottage layout can be seen above.

Bedroom 1 – A double bedroom (from Ash Cottage), with an ensuite bathroom. This bedroom has a wooden double bed with a large bathroom. This contains a walk in shower with disabled chair, WC and basin plus a bath.

Bedroom 2 – This will be a new beautiful Twin/SuperKing Bedroom with stone feature wall, balcony door to the garden patio. Wardrobe and dresser. A beautiful statement room, boasting the beauty of a Dartmoor Cottage. (Previously the living area in Rowan Cottage)

There is also an open plan dining room/living room with seating for 4, a television and comfortable seating. The kitchen is fully equipped with oven, microwave, fridge freezer and plenty of storage. Level access to the garden from here also.

There is an additional family bathroom with all facilities including a bath with electric shower over the bath.

Rowan will still be all on one level. Great for those with additional needs.

Creating Inclusive Outdoor Spaces

The beauty of Dartmoor National Park is best enjoyed outdoors, so we designed beautiful, accessible outdoor spaces. We created a large patio area with comfortable seating. Perfect for alfresco dining. The garden is surrounded by high fencing to promote safe and secure environment for dogs

The Transformation

The cottages will be transformed into one seamless cottage which gives our customer the perfect base to enjoy Devon and Cornwall.  The newly revamped Rowan Cottage will be available from January 2025.
